Autumn Winter 2022

CASA FLOTANTE, a collection imagined through the lens of idyllic holidays’ past, a renewed emphasis on artisanal craftsmanship and refined comfort.

“The collection takes notes from daydreams of past holidays spent sailing around the Islands of Spain– the colours, architecture, food, and energy. I wanted to create my ideal holiday wardrobe, filled with artisanal garments that have a completely sun-drenched feel.” – explained COMMAS Founder and Creative Director Richard Jarman of the collection. Jarman designed the collection from his Sydney studio, recollecting the synergies between the alfresco summer lifestyles of both Spain and Australia.

Inspired to experiment with texture, Jarman employed detailed and delicate woven fabrics to sit alongside highly technical materials. He and his team worked with mills in Italy and Japan to design custom fabrics with unique hand-feels, like fine cotton linens that drape perfectly, sheer woven rope shirts and shorts, and a voluminous textured recycled cotton Japanese paper hoodie that reimagines the streetwear staple for sunnier climates.

These fabrics allowed for slouchy tailoring in the perfect relaxed linen suit, unstructured yet refined, designed to be worn on evenings under the stars. This season, printed silk sets epitomize refined luxury, while an oversized seersucker jacket provides light outerwear for an easy-going temperament.

The collection’s optimistic colour palette comprises washed-out, skin-kissed, muted tones that evoke summers past and future, which are interspersed with soft pinks, lavenders, and beige-blues. Brought to life by hand-painted artworks including “bathers” - a seaside scene of two women bathing by the water, inspired by Milton Avery’s lucid paintings - and a faded sundial print in both deep blue and cream hues.

Photoshoot notes: Captured on the volcanic island of Lanzarote (the northern- and easternmost of the Canary Islands) by Spanish photographer Jorge Perez Ortiz and Italian stylist James Valeri, the lookbook follows in COMMAS’ tradition of highlighting the most extraordinary natural landscapes in its ever-evolving visual output.
